Day Nine

Who are You? Whose are You?

Aren’t those great questions? It’s such an innocent-looking sentence, but discovering the answer and being sure of it can be most challenging! At its root, it’s a question of identity and belonging, but let’s start with identity. The “Who are you?” question is loaded with possibilities. Are you what you do for a living or as a pastime? Are you what your family, your friends, or even those who don’t like you see you as? Has whatever you are been decided by you or by others? So often we end up being what we’ve been pigeon-holed as. We just let ourselves become what we’re perceived to be by those who influence and possibly control us most.

That’s not how it’s meant to be. God didn’t make us powerful and free for us to give it all away or have it stolen from us. He made us powerful and free so that we could choose Him and be powerful within the relationship of covering and love that He gives us. You will have various roles with each person in your life – a mum or dad, sister or brother, co-worker, pastor,

or local street sweeper. But above these is the most important identity tag of all – you’re a daughter or son of Father God, brother or sister to Jesus, sharing His DNA, and carrying it wherever you go. That’s who you are!

So…Whose are you? Who do you follow? Who heads your family? Who do you look to for support and protection? Where do you turn when things are rough? Who do you feel comfortable with? Who do you belong and feel loyal to? Is it with Abba, Father God? Choose Him because He wants to protect and provide for you! He wants to be your Father.

Reading:

And you did not receive the “spirit of religious duty,” leading you back into the fear of never being good enough. But you have received the “spirit of full acceptance,” enfolding you into the family of God. And you will never feel orphaned, for as he rises up within us, our spirits join him in saying the words of tender affection, “Beloved Father!” For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being,“You are God’s beloved child! Prayer and Response:

Read through the above again. Have you ever felt fully and unconditionally loved? Have you ever felt that you belong unquestionably? The truth is you are, and you do! Spend some time today asking Father God to show you what this truly looks like, allowing yourself to feel the fullness of the depth of it. You may want to ask Jesus to show you how He feels about you too – after all, you’re family! Take your time. Try and write down your emotions. Let them flow. Don’t be rushed.
